Had to watch this documentary about slavery. Mostly it was information I already knew, but there were a couple interesting parts. It’s definitely decently made and the content is fine enough. The low resolution doesn’t help though.
This YouTube channel as well appears to be a good source of history documentary playlists.
The first part I found interesting was about Harriet Tubman. She was also called “Moses”. Tubman would carry around a revolver with her, it’s purpose was not only for the slave catchers and dogs, but as a way to ensure everybody in the group moved forward, as a slave choosing to return would endanger the entire group. (“Go on or die.”) Which Moses may also be kind of a fitting nickname because the Jews often complained about missing the food and comfort of Egypt.
And the children of Israel said unto them, Would to God we had died by the hand of the LORD in the land of Egypt, when we sat by the flesh pots, and when we did eat bread to the full; for ye have brought us forth into this wilderness, to kill this whole assembly with hunger. (Exod. 16:3)
Tubman was probably a bit more successful than Moses, where only two Jews eventually made it into the promised land. Moses himself didn’t even make it.
The other part was at around 27: 28 where one of the “experts” says:
One of the things that I think young people today should be aware of is the range of extremely important contributions that African-Americans have made to American society over the years, and that they have been able to make these contributions in the face of overwhelming odds. They have fought for rights which had been denied them and which we now have available to us, to which quite often, quite frequently we abuse and don’t take full advantage of.
Interesting. Maybe it’s because this documentary is older, doubt they’d put a message like that if it was made today.
